If you like good books and if you want a preview of what is best in graphic arts right now, I recommend the excellent book "Contemporary Graphic Design " published by Taschen. In this lovely book Charlotte and Peter Fiell we present an overview of the work of 115 contemporary designers.

The authors chose to present several works by artist (print, web, collages, montages, personal work) and their book a page, a personal space where they explain their work, their motivations, their personal vision of graphic arts. Thus, we can learn more about these "new" talents and thus better understand the work they deliver us.

The few books published by Taschen that I have are all very good and this one is no exception to the rule. This is a book that I recommend for anyone interested in graphic design and wish to have at hand a wealth of inspiration.

The book is available from Taschen around 30 €. The price is not excessive I think because the quality of the book is the rendezvous. In addition, the research work of two authors Charlotte and Peter Fiell is truly remarkable with over 550 pages of outstanding visual artists and top-notch ... Some links

Weltzer Gaetan aka "Spartan" has recently opened its portfolio. You may already know his blog " Design Spartan " in which the young artist takes us into his world and his passion for digital painting.

Now, you have access to all his work together in this new portfolio "page one" simple but effective. Despite his 19 years, this artist has great potential if we are to judge by the quality of its work.

To give you an idea of his talent here is a small selection of works made by Spartan:

You have probably noticed, more and more galleries are flooding the web site ... In the lot, there are some good references, including the site Design Meltdown . With more than 20,000 sites listed, sorted by themes, colors, layout ... this gallery created by Patrick McNeil is a good way to track trends in web design.

Seeing that he had at hand a whole lot of references, the creator of the site has decided to choose the best sites to rank them and present them in his book: "The Webdesigner's Idea Book .

The presentation is simple and effective: 6 main categories for classifying the sites proposed: by Type (blog, portfolio, e-commerce ...), by style (retro, collage, 3D ...), by themes ( Nature, splatters, workplace ...), by Color, Element (icons, rounded corners, ornate backgrounds ...), and finally by structures (horizontal tabs, one page ...). The sites are presented via screenshots (1 to 4 depending on the site), and each category is introduced by a few words of the author. Small bonus, you also have access to color palettes sites (pallets made by the Colour Lovers site ).

Even if you can quite find the inspiration or inform you of current trends through the galleries of sites on the web, I think it's nice to enjoy the feel of paper, touch, turning Changes ... Some equipment that does not hurt? Especially that the media is of good quality: glossy, square format, and nearly 250 pages of examples. A yes, last thing ... the book is available on Amazon for around $ 15, good value for money in my opinion.

What? Still yet another gallery of websites? Yes, but this time, Mobile awsomeness is a site about design for mobile sites. In addition to the classical presentation screenshot for each site, 4 pages are presented which can be a good overview of the whole. Like almost all the galleries, a voting system can give your opinion and the rss feed allows you to retrieve updates in real time.

Rubric: "Mobile Web resource" is, in my view, the added value of the site. If the world of design and development on mobile you want, you will find here many resources: a list of books on the topic, part "Guides Frameworks and platforms, a list of validation tools, and links to emulators to test your sites on an appropriate interface. Finally, an entire section is reserved for the Iphone.

is quite by accident that I stumbled upon the site Designers Toolbox. If you do not know the place, here's the deal: this site is a toolbox for anyone working in the creation of web sites or in the field of print.

Designers Toolbox is divided into three main sections plus a personal space for users wishing to open an account on the site.

In the "Design Life " you will find various articles about design in general, a weekly selection of interesting websites etc. ...
The " Store" where you can buy many resources such as psd backgrounds, templates and various miscellaneous documents (client contracts, maintenance contracts, specifications for freelance travalleurs etc ...) and resource vector. Another interesting thing, the site offers a tool for creating your portfolio. I have not tested but the service is free for the first 15 days so it can be worth a look ...

But it is undoubtedly the "Design Resources " which is the most interesting ... Here is the cave of Ali Baba! You can find many resources completely free: Templates for print (envelopes of different sizes, files, covers for cd / dvd discs, business cards etc ...) and many tools to help you in creating your web layouts.

For Web designers, I recommend you go for a ride on the "Web Safe Area " where you can download free templates (psd) windows browsers (Safari, Firefox and IE) on different resolutions. In the same spirit, via the link "Web browser elements, the site makes available the psd of all the elements to your forms (radio buttons, check boxes, textarea, input-button, input-text, etc ...) based on multiple browsers and operating systems (XP, Vista, Mac). These resources will really save time if you create web designs so feel free to download, it's free!

The site also offers many tools available: a list of standard sizes of banners web graphics of the iPhone (iPhone GUI), a text generator "lorem ipsum" a list of major special characters encoded as html ... etc.

Is it still necessary to introduce Twitter? The famous social network created 3 years ago soon became over time a "place" almost unavoidable to expose his feelings of the moment, share his discoveries or just to talk with "Tweets" interposed.

On Twitter you can customize the page by changing the background image, color and text links etc. ... For those who wish to decline the graphic on their website or blog on their Twitter page, it might be interesting to go through a mock Photoshop before applying the changes directly online. It is always easier to go through a model before changing a web page. Not finding psd template representing precisely the basic interface for Twitter, I decided to create one myself. Having now completed

this work, I provide the psd file. I relied on a resolution of 1407px x 1200px. I recreated all editable, text and links included. So you do is add your background image, and change the color scheme through the layer blending options. Click on the pretty box to download the psd!
